Alt Text - Reviewer Guidelines
Check Image Alt Text
Go to the “Review and Publish” tab in the Alt Text App .
In some cases, you will need to view the context in order to determine if the alt text conveys the meaning that the image was intended to originally.
If the alt text is not sufficient, make the necessary changes and click “Continue.” (or “Finish” if it is the last image that needs reviewing for that course). Send any feedback via a personal message in Slack.
If the alt text is insufficient, and you don’t believe that sufficient alt text can be written, mark the image as “Needs Conversion.” This will remove it from the Alt Text tool.
If you think the image does not add anything of value to the page and doesn’t need alt text, mark it as decorative.
Once all the images for a course have been reviewed and updated, go to the “Review and Publish” tab. Click the “Publish” button on the right side of the screen for that course.
What Should I Look For?
Along with the common errors listed below, make sure to look for alt text that fits any of the different statuses in the board- needs conversion, expertise, etc.
Common Errors
Including “photo of”, “image of”, “graphic of”, etc. in the alt text- it’s unnecessarily repetitive.
Not making the alt text an appropriate length- sometimes it should be longer because it has a lot of detail, and sometimes there is too much detail about an unimportant image.
Describing an image out of context- sometimes editors include details about the image that aren’t necessary to the purpose of the image.
